Dr. Brandy Harrell: A leader in community behavioral health

As Director of Behavioral Health at Kinston Community Behavioral Health, Dr. Brandy Harrell has become a leader in the community. Through her work, she has made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals and families who struggle with mental health and substance use issues.

Dr. Harrell's path to becoming a leader in the community was shaped by her childhood experiences and the wisdom of her grandmother. She grew up in a less fortunate background but was always observant of how her grandmother helped others and asked questions.

“I realized there were individuals that had it much worse than I did and without parents to guide them,” said Harrell. “I felt there was something more I could do, so I became a volunteer at a summer and afterschool program.”

Her passion for helping others led her to take on a leadership role in the community. She has faced challenges as an influential Black woman, including gender and racial bias. However, she has overcome these challenges by advocating for herself and initiating culturally competent conversations.

Dr. Harrell has collaborated with many leaders to bring about positive change. She maintains that communication is the key to collaboration, and she has worked cross-sector to increase access to whole-person care and rural economic development.

In her opinion, some of the most pressing issues facing the community include access to behavioral health care, transportation, housing, and workforce development.

“We must work together as a community and step away from silos,” said Harrell. “As we anticipate positive outcomes from our legislators, partnering locally to improve resources for our residents is important.”

To balance her community involvement with other personal and professional responsibilities, Dr. Harrell takes a moment to evaluate the impact, assess the priority, and keep up with her calendar.

Dr. Harrell stays motivated by practicing self-care and seeking guidance from the Lord. Her future plans and goals for the community include bringing awareness and resources for individuals and families facing mental health and substance use issues to decrease stigma and increase access to services.

“I believe that individual wellness promotes a heathy family that will contribute to a healthy community,” said Harrell.

Dr. Harrell's dedication and passion for helping others have made her an influential figure in the community. Her leadership and collaborative efforts have brought about positive change and have inspired others to get involved and make a difference.
