UNC Lenoir Health Care CEO retires after 40-year career

For the past four years, Robert “Bob” Enders Jr. held the title of CEO at UNC Lenoir Health Care. He assumed the helm prior to the pandemic, and led the hospital through the Covid-19 surges. With the global emergency behind us, Enders said it was time to focus on his family. After a career that spanned about 40 years, he announced his retirement. His last day was Tuesday.

“When I came here, we really wanted to concentrate on rebuilding our medical staff,” said Enders. “We haven't got where we want it to be, but we've added doctors in general surgery and orthopedics and family medicine and pulmonology. We’re very happy about that.”

A successor has not been named. UNC Lenoir Health Care is in a nationwide search for his replacement.

“They've got a number of good candidates that they've been interviewing both within and outside the UNC system,” said Enders.

Enders is thankful for the welcome he received in eastern North Carolina.

“It's just been a great experience,” said Enders. “My wife, Bonnie, and I have enjoyed it.”

Enders will eventually move back to Pittsboro to be closer to his three daughters. He hopes to spend more time on his hobbies which include playing the guitar and the keyboard.

“I have three grown daughters in North Carolina who need an extra pair of hands to help them with their various house projects,” said Enders.
