HM Alliance to reopen former Lakeview Packing Co. facility in Greene County

The North Carolina Global TransPark Economic Development Region (NCGTPEDR) has brought three countries together as it announced the renovation and operation of the former Lakeview Packing Co. facility. In a joint venture between Highland USA and Mercator, Inc, HM Alliance will process pork and poultry. The 49,000 square feet facility sits on 50 acres in the Arba community.

“This is the beginning of a new company, an alliance between the largest meat importer in Korea with a trading company in Raleigh,” said Jose Martinez of HM Alliance.

Mercator has affiliated companies, Mercator Mundi in Mexico and Mercator Orbi in Canada. Highland USA is a subsidiary of Highland Foods, a global food company in South Korean. HM Alliance will bring 25 jobs to Greene County to start and with the hope of adding 50 more in three years.

“My company is in South Korea,” said Mrs. Young Mi Youn of HM Alliance. “We imported 150,000 metric tons of meat last year. We need more products from North Carolina, not only meat but also agricultural products such as the sweet potato.”

Per NCGTPEDR’s press release, HM Alliance will process pork and poultry into small pieces, which are processed in the form of semi-finished products. The products are to be sold in North America and overseas for business-to-business customers, such as restaurants and hotels.

“Today we are announcing a new heartbeat, a strong heartbeat, a global heartbeat right here at this very facility in Green County,” said Bennie Heath, Chair of the Greene County Board of Commissioners.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Pitt & Greene Electric Membership Corporation, and the North Carolina Global TransPark Economic Development Region partnered with Greene County Government on this project.
