Obituary: Mary Kathy Hughes Beaman

Mary Kathy Hughes Beaman, age 72, passed away Saturday morning, November 11th, 2023, at the ECU Inpatient Hospice in Greenville. A native of Greene County, Kathy was born February 25, 1951, the daughter of William J. Hughes, Sr. and Mary Ellen Hardy Hughes.

Reared in Snow Hill, Kathy was a lifelong member of Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church and was active in many of the church ministries. She attended the Greene County Schools and was a member of the 1969 graduating class of Greene Central High School. She continued her post-secondary education at Meredith College before transferring to East Carolina University where she completed her undergraduate degree.

She worked for many years with the Greene County Department of Social Services before returning to her alma mater of Greene Central as a teacher in the Home Science Department where she remained until her retirement. Following the death of her mother, Kathy and her husband Kenneth, moved to the home where she had grown up and she could often be seen working in the yard tending to the pots of flowers she loved to change with each season.

Kathy is survived by her husband of more than 54 years, Kenneth W. Beaman; daughter, Kathleen Beaman Moon (Eric) of Wilmington; son, Kent Beaman of Beaufort; grandchildren, Alyssa Beaman, Fisher Moon, Noah Moon and Lindsey Moon Reynolds (Sean); and a brother, William J. Hughes Jr. (Rhonda).

A Service of Death and Resurrection to remember and celebrate Kathy’s life will be held by the graveside 2 PM Tuesday, November 14th, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with Reverend Emily Hamil-Blair officiating. The family will greet friends and extended family at the cemetery immediately following the service.
