Obituary: Joyce Ellen Gaylor Frederick

Kinston – Joyce Ellen Gaylor Frederick, loving mother, beloved sister and aunt, dedicated nurse and loyal friend died Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Spring Arbor of Kinston. She was surrounded by family and passed after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will held on Saturday, March 5 at 11 AM, at Gordon Street Christian Church, officiated by Rev. Doug Stokes. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception in the church fellowship hall.

Joyce was born in Kinston to Charles Owen and Mary Manning Gaylor on October 11, 1944. She was the youngest of seven children. She was a 1962 graduate of Grainger High School and later a graduate of Lenoir Memorial School of Nursing. She was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years. After retiring Joyce flourished as a volunteer nurse with the Red Cross. Joyce also volunteered for Meals on Wheels delivering meals and visiting shut-ins. A lifelong member of Gordon Street Christian Church, Joyce served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and was CWF Worship Chairman. She had also served as President of Beta Sigma Phi professional organization.

Joyce is survived by her son, Nathan Brent Frederick and wife, Adrianne of Columbia, SC; sister, Marilyn Gaylor Rouse and husband, Keith of Kinston; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Owen Gaylor, Jr. and Bobby Ray Gaylor; sisters, Jean Gaylor Guthrie, Mary Francis Gaylor Spears, and Virginia Gaylor Dunn, and a niece, Laurie Guthrie Woolard. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made in Joyce’s memory to Gordon Street Christian Church, 118 East Gordon Street, Kinston, NC or to the American Red Cross, at www.redcross.org.
