Obituary: Doris Ann Sutton

La Grange-Doris Ann Sutton, 80, was welcomed by the warm embrace of her Savior as her faith became sight on Monday, May 17, 2021. Doris Ann was born in Lenoir County to the late Clarence Franklin Skinner and Amy Louise Skinner on May 20, 1940. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Dempsey Skinner and Dorothy Marie Skinner.

After a career of serving others at Caswell Center for 30 years, Doris Ann enjoyed her retirement by traveling the world over with her family. Experiencing locations including the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, California, Mexico, and London, no place could compare to her trip to Israel. There, she saw the sights spoken of in the Bible and was even baptized in the Jordan River. Caring for her home alongside her husband, Lynwood, the two raised their daughters in a loving, Christian home.

Always actively involved with her church, White Oak Grove Original Free Will Baptist, Doris Ann taught her children by example by her generosity to others and service to her Lord. Doris Ann’s radio was always tuned to Southern Gospel music. From the Gaither's to Dixie Melody Boys and Jackson Heights, she loved them all. Any time a group was performing locally, she could likely be found in the audience enjoying the spread of the gospel through song. Always one to stay busy, Doris Ann enjoyed cross stitching and scrap booking. The numerous scrapbooks she created hold volumes of stories and memories that her family continues to cherish.

She maintained membership with the La Grange Garden Club as well as the Red Hat Society where she could be in service to others and enjoy fellowship with her friends. The love Doris Ann had for her family was exemplified in her care for each of them. Her sons-in-law were immediately welcomed as part of the family, and she was the best wife, mother, grandmother, and matriarch of her clan. No matter the time of day or the need at hand, Doris Ann was only a phone call away. Her daughters relied on her strength and concern throughout their life.

Around the home, Doris Ann could often be found in her kitchen. A chance to sit around her table and dine was a welcomed event for those in her family, no matter the menu. However, no one could make a better 10-layer chocolate cake, and all of her loved ones can attest to her skill in making chicken salad.

Each year at Christmas, she would purchase enough chickens to prepare enough that all of her family could be satisfied. Her vegetable garden grew a bounteous crop, and she made sure to can and preserve the freshest of fruits and vegetables for her family to benefit from each year. Loving any time she could spend with her family, one of Doris Ann’s favorite pastimes was attending ball games for her great-grandkids. She was a constant in their life, cheering them on at every event. A yearly vacation to the beach was planned by Doris Ann for the whole family as long as she was able to get them together.

A service to celebrate and remember Doris Ann’s life will be held at Rouse Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2021 with Pastors Bob Smith and Ray Smeltzer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, La Grange.

Left to cherish Doris Ann’s memory is her husband, Lynwood Davis Sutton; daughters, Vicky Granillo and husband Arthur and Lisa West and husband, Bubby; grandchildren, David Lynn Crawford and wife, Kristi, Sarah Renee St. Clair and husband, Benjamin, Elisa Johnson and husband, Joey, Kellan Granillo, Amy Fulghum and husband, Henry, and Leslie Anna Rouse and husband, Joseph; special grandchild, Jacolyn Whitney; great-grandchildren, Gracie Crawford, Blake Crawford, Tristen Ferrell, Nicole Ferrell, Ethen Ferrell, David Fulghum, Lily Fulghum, Cameron Fulghum, Weston Rouse, Madilyn Rouse, and Gavin Rouse; siblings, George Edward Skinner and Mary Grace Jackson and friend Ed Slayton; and many special cousins and friends with whom she got together often.
