Local resident to be a part of a PBS Show

Local resident Seraphim Smith has landed his dream job to become a part of a PBS show. NC Weekend, a show produced by UNC-TV and funded by viewers and Visit North Carolina, will feature segments of Smith showcasing different parts of North Carolina.

“I’m just so excited to show the world eastern North Carolina,” said Smith.

From early childhood, Smith was aware he wanted to be one of the voices on PBS programming. He admired PBS for their educational programming and is excited to be a part of it.

Unsure where to begin, Smith, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and an English minor from Middle Tennessee State University, used the connections he made and reached out to PBS. His first experience with production was when he assisted with Vivian Howard’s television show.

In 2015, Smith joined Vivian Howard’s staff and later worked as a marketing director for Pride of Kinston. Through his work, as well as his relationship with SmART Kinston, he was able to network with PBS producers.

“One night, not too long ago, I said I’m just going to go for it,” said Smith. “What have I got to lose?”

Smith signed the contract with PBS in the beginning of August. He hopes to show how special North Carolina is to him and the beauty of the land and its people. Smith will continue to explore Lenoir and surrounding counties to showcase the treasure trove of agricultural beauty.

“I hope to help several of the local economies by being able to highlight different parts of eastern North Carolina,” said Smith.

Smith will be working on his first segment this fall. The show is comprised of segments that are about four minutes each. Each segment showcases an aspect of a town in North Carolina.
