LCPS 2020-2021 School Year Calendar Changes

LCPS 2020-2021 School Year Calendar Changes

As Governor Cooper transitions North Carolina into phase one of re-opening, our local schools are preparing for the 2020-2021 school year. The Lenoir County Board of Education had unanimously approved a traditional school instructional calendar for 2020-2021, which was overwhelmingly endorsed by LCPS teachers and other employees.

The traditional calendar combined the district’s desire to finish the first semester and high school exams before the Christmas vacation with state requirements for designating opening and closing dates within a set range, for achieving a minimum of 1,025 instructional hours, for calendaring teacher workdays and for providing the required number of holidays and vacation days.

“The N.C. General Assembly, in legislation approved this past weekend and signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper on Monday, set opening day of the 2020-2021 school year as August 17, a week earlier than usual,” said LCPS Patrick Holmes.

Teachers at schools on the traditional calendar – all but Early College High School – were due to return to work on Aug. 10 with their last workday being June 8, 2021. Early College is housed on the campus of Lenoir Community College and its students begin taking LCC courses early in their high school career, so the Early College calendar is nearly a duplicate of LCC’s.

Teachers at the Early College were due to return for the 2020-2021 school year on Aug. 3. with classes resuming Aug. 10 and school ending for underclassmen on May 14, 2021. Graduation day for the Class of 2021 is currently scheduled for May 5, 2021.

LCC’s schedule has not changed for the 2020-2021 school year.

According to Richy Huneycutt, Director of Marketing, Recruiting and Communications/Assistant to the President, “Registration day for LCC students is Aug. 14 and classes are scheduled to start Aug. 17, as originally scheduled.”

The LCPS Board of Education will meet soon to update the 2020-2021 school calendar.

“LCPS appreciates that guidance from the state. District administrators will use that guidance to produce a revised calendar for the next school year during May and plan to present that calendar to the Lenoir County Board of Education at its June meeting,” said Holmes.
