Flag flown over capital presented to son of Gary Kornegay

For his service to his state, and to his country, and on behalf of Senator Thom Tillis’s office, NC Representative Chris Humphrey and Tillis representative Adam Caldwell bestowed a flag flown over the capital to Gary Kornegay’s son, Samuel Kornegay.

“There really are no words I can say to express my gratitude. Just know from our hearts to yours we appreciate it,” said Samuel Kornegay.

Gary Kornegay served in the National Guard for 16 years and the United States Air Force for four years and retired from the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office after 30 years of service. He died on November 16th, 2020.

“It’s our honor to do it. It’s never easy to lose a loved one,” said Humphrey after presenting the flag.

Gary Kornegay supported several associations throughout his community, including the Greene-Jones-Lenoir Sherriff’s Association, Grifton Mason Lodge #243, and the Hugo Volunteer Fire Department where he was an honorary member.

Senator Tillis’s office can arrange for an American flag to be flown over the U.S. Capitol for any North Carolina resident who wishes to purchase one. Flags can be flown in someone's honor or to commemorate special occasions.

“It was an honor to serve, as a county commissioner, with Gary Kornegay for several years. Being a Lenoir County employee for 30 years is a testament to his dedication to the people of this great county and the state of North Carolina,” said Humphrey. “It’s a privilege to work with Senator Tillis’s office and Senator Perry and being able to present this flag to the family on his behalf.”
