Senator Thom Tillis’s representative Adam Caldwell, Commissioner J. Mac Daughety and Rep. Chris Humphrey presented a flag from the U.S. Capitol to Mrs. Hazel Bradshaw Sult for her 100th birthday.

“Susan and I are so happy to send our best wishes to you on your hundredth birthday,” said Senator Thom Tillis in a letter delivered by Caldwell.

Tillis, a United States Senator from North Carolina, honored Sult for the milestone she reached by turning 100 years old. Sult, surrounded by members of her family, accepted the flag before visiting with the representatives.

“We heard about your big birthday, and we wanted to celebrate you. We have a flag that was flown over the capital for you,” said Caldwell.

Every year, Americans request more than 100,000 flags flown in the Flag Program. The U.S. Flag program, which allows constituents the ability to request flags that have been flown over the U.S. Capitol Building for the commemoration of special occasions.

“In your lifetime you’ve witnessed our nation’s greatest challenges and trials and the memories you carry are priceless,” read Caldwell in the letter from Tillis.

Born in 1920, Sult has lived through the defining moments of the United States including the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and World War II from 1939-1945.

“Thank you so much,” said Sult. “I just want to feel better, and a little bit younger.”

Daughety and Humphrey both asked Sult if they could celebrate her 101st birthday with her, and she states she thought she could make it another year.
