An evening of great music from local talent will take place Saturday.

The Gate of Lenoir County and Boys 2 Men Ministry will present “The Voice of Christian Music,” Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Kinston Community Center on Vernon Avenue. The event will be a musical competition featuring local talent and celebrities.

Among those set to perform is Kinston Police Department Chief Alonzo Jaynes, who will showcase a relatively hidden ability.

“I was at a community event and Sue Ellen Maddux had asked me to be a part of this one,” Jaynes said. “What many people didn’t know was that I had spent some time doing gospel rap, traveling to different states to spread the word of the Lord and even made an album that charted for a while.

“Ultimately, I transitioned to what I do currently and have enjoyed it.”

Donna Hardy, executive director of The Gate, said she’s excited for the slate of participants.

“This competition will have about 12 people participating and I’m excited to hear the local talent involved,” Hardy said. “All of the proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the Boys 2 Men Lawn Care Ministry — we want to keep that going as the service is for widows, handicapped and the elderly.

“The people in the ministry clean yards and work tirelessly at no cost to who they’re servicing to make the area a better place.”

The cost of a ticket is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
