Egbert M. Herring, Jr.

November 20, 1929 - December 28, 2018

LA GRANGE | Egbert Marcus Herring Jr., 89, passed away in the early morning hours of December 28, 2018. Egbert was born November 20, 1929 in Lenoir County to the late Egbert Marcus Herring and Nora Becton Rhodes. Egbert’s wife of 70 years, Grace Carlyle Herring, preceded him in death on September 22, 2018.

Egbert was a lifelong farmer and loved the simple country life. He took pleasure and pride in working the ground and tending to his crops. For Egbert, there was no better place than being at the home he built on the family farm.

Egbert lived his life by the principles of the Bible, faith and the power of prayer. The Golden Rule served as a guiding force in his journey through life. He strongly believed in treating others as one wanted to be treated. He took great pride in being a man of his word. With Egbert, his word was his bond. Wise beyond his years, others often sought him out for advice.

Egbert loved working in the garden and woodworking. Many hours were spent out in his barn working with his hands. His grandchildren have fond memories of the cradles he built with precision and love. Several generations of grandchildren and baby dolls have been rocked to sleep in the cradles he crafted.

Egbert married his beloved wife, Grace, on October 20, 1948. Their 70 year marriage personified love. For the last 20 years, Egbert devoted his total life and being to the care of Grace. He often stated that it was his privilege and pleasure. Their love for one another has set a great example to the generations of family that have followed. Egbert was the quiet, strong patriarch of the Herring family. Egbert was a man of few words, but when he spoke you listened.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Egbert M. Herring, Jr. will be held Sunday, December 30, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Flatfield Cemetery.

Egbert is survived by five children, Egbert M. Herring, III and wife Geneva, Janet Penuel and husband, Glenn, Michael Herring and wife, Deborah, Donald Herring and wife, Pam, and Karen Measley and husband, Phillip; sister, Addie Rhodes Smith and husband, Paul; sister-in-law, Marie Herring; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
