Letter to the Editor for Dec. 2, 2018

Dear Editor,

The Friends of the Homeless emergency shelter has just completed its 28th year of operation. The executive committee of Friends of the Homeless wants to thank our community for its outstanding support of this critical community ministry since its inception. Due to the support of the Lenoir-Greene United Way, churches, families, individuals, civic groups and so many others, the shelter has been recognized nationally for its quality operation.

Our executive committee thanks the community for its understanding of our new policy in 2018 of not accepting used clothing due to storage and hygiene issues. We have also continued to partner with SAFE and the Flynn Home to insure that we are not duplicating services.

As we enter our 29th year, the economic climate and storm impact have increased the demand for services to families, so your continued support is very much appreciated. Persons interested in volunteering or providing other means of support may contact us at 112 N. Independence Street, P. O. Box 2136, Kinston, NC 28502, or 252-522-2788.

Special thanks to Jasper Newborn and James Wilkins for their years of leadership at the shelter and to all of our volunteers who help provide a safe haven for so many men, women and families throughout the year.

We are so blessed as a community and the Friends of the Homeless Shelter shines bright as indication of our commitment to all of our citizens. On behalf of our staff and entire executive committee, best wishes for a most healthy and prosperous 2019.

Sincerely,
Danny Rice, President
Executive Committee
Friends of the Homeless, Inc.
