Obituary: Melvin Lee Ham
UPDATE: A visitation will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the chapel at Howard-Carter Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Craig Ham officiating. A private burial service will take place at a later time.
Lenoir County woman arrested on meth trafficking charges after investigation
A three-month investigation into the selling and distribution of methamphetamine in Lenoir County resulted in the arrest of a Lenoir County woman on Thursday.
Gun charges filed in two separate incidents overnight
On January 16, 2025, at approximately 9:44 PM, officers from B-Squad conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Stadium Drive and Charlotte Avenue. The driver, identified as Montez Nelson, 44, of Kinston, became uncooperative and refused to follow officer commands. After officers removed Nelson from the vehicle, a search uncovered a firearm, drug paraphernalia, and cocaine.

Kinston substitute teacher charged with assault on child with a disability
On January 10, 2025, the Kinston Police Department was notified of an assault on a 6-year-old child by LCPS Central Office . Officers spoke with the child's parents, who had been informed of the incident by Northwest Elementary School. The officers were told that the child's substitute teacher, Martha Jones (69, of Kinston), had hit their child.
