Once upon a time, the telephone at our home hung on the hallway wall. It had a long, coiled cord attached so the receiver would reach to my room. I would rush home from school and finish my homework so I could call Jean Chapman to discuss all that had happened that day at Savannah High School, particularly on the playground.

CCCC announces President’s List

SANFORD, N.C. - The following students have been named to the Central Carolina Community College President's List for the Spring 2024 semester, according to the CCCC Student Records and Registrar’s Office of the Student Onboarding and Success Division. Students named to the President's List received all A's in all classes, were registered for at least 12 semester hours, and received no incomplete grades.

LaGrange: Mr. Lowell Thomas Hardy, known best as “Goo”, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 10, 2024, at his home. Funeral Services will be held 7 PM Friday, July 12th at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with Pastor Jeff Hayes and Pastor Scott Hardy officiating. Committal Services will be held privately for the family at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

Obituary: Willie Moore

Willie Marvin Moore, 76, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. A celebration of life will be held at Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church in Arba on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Percy Cunningham and Johnny Wiggins officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the Family Life Center. A private committal for the family will be held at East Carolina Veterans Cemetery at a later date.

Lenoir County under flash flood warning

Lenoir County is currently under a flash flood warning. Multiple streets in downtown Kinston are impassable due to flooding. Areas of Hwy 11 N and Hwy 11 S are also experiencing partial flooding, which is impacting vehicle passage. Two vehicles have become stranded in flood waters on Hwy 11 N in front of Covation Bio plant. The public is urged to use extreme caution when traveling and to never drive through flooded waters.

"Bureaucratic tyranny of the minority" challenged: Pink Hill's vote stands on mixed beverage referendum

PINK HILL - A recent legislative change has validated the mixed beverage referendum held in Pink Hill during the November 2022 election. Initially declared invalid due to the town not meeting the required 300 registered voters, the town had only 281, the will of the people is now upheld. Senate Bill 527, signed by Governor Roy Cooper on Monday, lowers the requirement to 200 registered voters and retroactively took effect on November 1, 2022.

Ronnie Darrell Lanier, 88, formerly of Kinston, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, in Oriental. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 12 noon at Edwards Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be conducted Friday, July 12, 2024, at 3PM at Westview Cemetery.
