More than 60 backpacks stuffed not with school supplies but with “healthy, nutritious and fun food” went out to three LCPS middle schools last week in a project spearheaded by Kinston’s First Presbyterian Church that aims to help bridge the hunger gap for students when they’re away from school for the weekend.

Alton "Mickey" Parker Davis, Jr., 80, of Kinston, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. Inurnment for Mickey and his beloved wife, Brenda, will take place in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Mrs. Carol Morris Wells, age 79, passed away Sunday evening, September 24th, 2023, at Lenoir UNC Health Care in Kinston. Funeral services will be held graveside 2 PM Thursday, September 28th, at the Maury Cemetery with Pastor Allen Ham officiating. As of last week, William Gray is no longer Pink Hill’s Town Attorney. Gray, a lawyer from Deep Run, was appointed by Mayor Yvonne Deatherage in April, and voted on by Commissioners Penny Murphy and James Quinn with Pete Fantini as a dissenting vote.
Officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop with Kelly Luke for suspicion of Driving While Impaired. Luke refused to stop the vehicle and left the city limits. Officers pursued Luke at very low speeds, until she eventually came to stop. Luke was arrested and charged with the following:

George Saxon Parrott, 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, NC. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2 pm at Westview Cemetery with Kermit Braswell officiating.
James “Buck” Foyles, Sr., 78, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023. A Celebration of his Life will be conducted Monday at 6:30pm in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 to 6:30pm.
