KPD provides case update on January shooting

On Thursday, February 2nd, 2023, warrants were obtained for Shy’qim Hooker, 22, of Kinston  for his involvement in Saturday’s shooting incident. Hooker was arrested on Friday, February  3rd, 2023, without incident and charged with Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling and Attempted Murder. He has been placed in the Lenoir County Jail under a secured bond.  

Obituary: Fred Warren Harrison

Fred Warren Harrison, age 92, passed away at his home Thursday, February 2, 2023. A Service of Death and Resurrection to celebrate Fred’s life will be held 2 PM Sunday, February 5th, at Westminster United Methodist Church with Reverend Dennis Peay officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Herbert Gray, 78, transitioned Friday, January 27, 2023 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Viewing for Mr. Gray will be from 3pm to 6 pm Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Mills Funeral Home with his Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity rites following at 7 pm.

GEC Students Attend State Beta Convention

Nine members of the Greene Early College High School Beta Club attended  the North Carolina Senior Beta State Convention in Greensboro, January 27-28.  Beta is an educational youth organization in America to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. 

John Hood: Deaths of Despair Need Careful Analysis

According to the latest-available set of comparable data, North Carolina ranks 33rd in the nation in “deaths of despair” — that is, in the combined rates of suicides, fatal drug overdoses, and alcohol-induced deaths. In 2020 our age-adjusted rate was 55.5 deaths of despair per 100,000 residents, slightly higher than the national average of 54.8. From 2018 to 2020, our rate rose by 26%.
