State Highway Patrol Promotes Traffic Safety for Holidays

The State Highway Patrol expects the coming weeks to bring more vehicle traffic to our roadways with an increase in holiday travelers. This expected increase in roadway users will put a premium on the need for awareness, enforcement and education by the Patrol as it hopes to curb dangerous driver behaviors to include speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.

Local fire departments respond to structure fire on Camellia Street

Kinston Fire Department, Lenoir County Emergency Services, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, Southwood Fire Department, North Lenoir Fire and Rescue, Sandy Bottom Fire Department and Deep Run Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 460 Camellia Street in Kinston. The homeowner stated that their stove caught fire. There were no human injuries, but the family dog was hurt in the fire.

CSS Neuse Museum is Certified Sensory Inclusive

The CSS Neuse Museum has partnered with non-profit organization KultureCity to provide a sensory inclusive experience for all museum programs and events. This new initiative will make exploring the museum a little easier for visitors with sensory sensitivities, including people on the autism spectrum, as well as people with sensory processing disorders, PTSD and other needs.

North Carolina has an official state bird (the Northern Cardinal), an official state reptile (the Eastern Box Turtle), an official state insect (the honeybee), an official state mammal (the Gray Squirrel), an official saltwater fish (the Channel Bass), an official freshwater fish (the Southern Appalachian Brook Trout), an official state marsupial (the Virginia Opossum, which seems awfully unpatriotic), and two official state amphibians, the Pine Barrens Treefrog and the Marbled Salamander.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for Greene County Volunteers. Special Volunteer Types: Individual (one person), Group/Team (two or more individuals who volunteered together as a team), National Service (volunteers with AmeriCorps, VISTA, or Senior Corps), Director of Volunteers-(a paid staff person who exceeds expectations of volunteer management).
