Greene County Schools started a two-way immersion program in 2003. In this program, students learn English language arts and social students in English for half the day. The other half of the day they learn Spanish language arts, math, and science in Spanish.
On Sunday, July 3rd, 2022, at approximately 4:20 am, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a person that had been shot at a residence on the 300 block of Sunshine St. Kinston, N.C. Officers arrived on scene to find Kianna Newborn, 25, of Kinston deceased as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. On Sunday, July 3rd, 2022, at approximately 6:30 pm, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a person that had been shot on the 200 block of S. Adkin St. Kinston, N.C. Officers arrived on scene to find Michael Davis Jr., 42, of Kinston with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Davis was transported to ECU Health Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries. The investigation is in its early stages and investigators are working to determine a motive and if this incident is related to the earlier shooting.
Over the last few years I have become increasingly patriotic, but I have struggled with how Christians should publicly display their patriotism given the divisive nature of our culture. For many years I wanted to separate my patriotism from my Christian faith as if they were two completely different belief systems. In one sense that is obviously true, but I will argue here that American patriotism is tied to Christian theology.
July 4th is the day we celebrate the birth of our nation. In 1776, Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies had a population of around 3 million people. These colonies had no army – just militias composed of citizen-soldiers. They were facing one of the world’s best-trained and most professional armies.
The Greene Central High School Band has been selected by The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation to receive new instruments. These new instruments include tubas, euphoniums, French horns, tenor saxophones, alto saxophones, trumpet, trombones, and a bass drum. The total retail value of this donation is over $40,000.
Kyle Smith, a native of Trenton, assumed the role of Jones County Manager in May. Previous manager Franky Howard stepped down after 15 years to become the CEO of ONWASA. Smith was the county finance officer before the Jones County Board of Commissioners selected him to be the interim county manager.
