Reece Gardner: Let's talk about age

Let's talk about Age. I wrote about Emma Morano a few years ago and the example she set for getting the most out of the years we are given on Earth. She had a positive attitude toward life, had devoted friends, and loved her pets. She died on April 15, 2017, at age 117. Until she was 115 she didn't have any live-in caregivers.

Pollocksville Fire Department improves fire suppression rating

We are pleased to announce an improvement to our fire suppression rating from NCDOI/OSFM. Not only were we able to go from a 6/9E to a 5/9E (lower numbers are better!), but we were also able to utilize our new tanker truck to be graded by the water haul method. This will help those who reside more than 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant. This is a big deal for the community!

Mike Parker: Strive to be part of the solution

As we near the end of one fiscal year and head into the next, I want to urge all of you to think about the causes you care about and ask how you can help meet the needs you see. Far too many people complain about situations in our society, and far too few are willing to step up to address these situations.

Persistence puts South Lenoir students in line for college aid, earns state award

Reina Kinnaly knows she can be a nagger, but she is unapologetic. Her dogged pursuit of South Lenoir High School seniors this past school year and her insistence they complete the paperwork critical to securing college scholarships, grants and loans have earned the school an NC First in FAFSA Innovation Award from myFutureNC, one of six presented in the state for 2022.
