Mary Joyce Jones Sutton, 87, passed away peacefully at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Sunday, June 5, 2022. A Graveside Service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 10 am at Fairview Cemetery with Rev Ronnie Hobgood officiating. On May 13, 2022, Agriculture Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack declared a natural disaster in the State of North Carolina based on losses caused by drought that occurred March 22, 2022 and continuing. As a result of this natural disaster, 3 North Carolina counties were declared eligible for Federal disaster assistance, including Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency (EM) loans for eligible family farmers.

The Lenoir County Health Department received confirmation from the North Carolina State Laboratory that another raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was located in the Northern part of Lenoir County.

Ending a June 3rd commencement ceremony, 49 Parrott Academy seniors turned their tassels and marched out of Ellis Simon Gym as graduates. Head of School David Moody saluted the Class of 2022 for their “spirit, enthusiasm, and talent.” He noted their honors in fine arts, six state athletic championships over four years of high school, and over 2,700 hours of community service in their senior year.

Tropical Storm Alex has formed this morning, but will continue to move away from the Southeast US this week. However, swell from this system will reach the NC coast later today, and an increased threat of dangerous rip currents is expected through at least mid week.
