Students’ careers started at LCC

Taylor Vick, Stacy Barron, and Lauren Enns have more in common than they knew. All three are from Greene County and they all enrolled in the Lenoir Community College Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act program after graduation from high school. While their stories are different, their end results are the same – their training has led to a promising career.

Social Security Board of Trustees: Combined trust funds projected depletion one year sooner than last year

The Social Security Board of Trustees today released its annual report on the long-term financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds. The combined asset reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASI and DI) Trust Funds are projected to become depleted in 2034, one year earlier than projected last year, with 78 percent of benefits payable at that time.

North Carolina's July County and area employment figures released

Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) decreased in 99 of North Carolina’s counties in July and remained unchanged in one. Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 9.1 percent while Avery County had the lowest at 3.5 percent. All fifteen of the state’s metro areas experienced rate decreases. Among the metro areas, Rocky Mount had the highest rate at 6.7 percent while Durham-Chapel Hill and Raleigh each had the lowest at 3.9 percent. The July not seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 4.6 percent.

Obituary - Ken Skinner

Stantonsburg - Nathan Kenneth “Ken” Skinner, Jr., 51, passed away on August 26, 2021. Although his departure from this life was unexpected and seems unfair, his welcome in Heaven had been prepared and his arrival was no less grand beyond compare. The family will receive friends at Rouse Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 beginning at 5:00 p.m. A service to celebrate and remember Ken’s life will follow the visitation at 6:00 p.m.

New exhibit opening at the CSS Neuse

Lt. Frances Lyell Hoge served as the Executive Officer aboard the CSS Neuse from February 1864 through the end of the Civil War but lived a life much larger than his brief time in Kinston. Based on research conducted by NC Historic Sites Education & Interpretation Supervisor Andrew Duppstadt, this temporary exhibit explores Hoge’s life from his education at the United States Naval Academy to his career as a civil engineer in Wheeling, West Virginia after the Civil War. The new temporary exhibit, which includes numerous artifacts on loan from Hoge descendants, will be unveiled at the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center in downtown Kinston on Saturday, September 4.

John Hood: Jefferson neighbors seek liberty

Before Thomas Jefferson died in 1826, he wrote his own epitaph. Did he mention any of his political offices? No. Jefferson wanted only three accomplishments listed on his gravestone: author of the Declaration of Independence, founder of the University of Virginia, and author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.

Governor Cooper signs executive order expanding access to Monoclonal Antibody Treatment for COVID-19

Governor Roy Cooper signed an Executive Order to make it easier for North Carolinians to access treatment for COVID-19. The Executive Order authorizes and directs State Health Director, Dr. Betsey Tilson, to issue a statewide standing order to expand access to monoclonal antibody treatment, which if taken early can decrease the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death. The Order will be in effect through November 30, 2021.

Anne M. Gaddis Cooperative Extension Scholarship of Lenoir County

This scholarship has been established in memory and honor of Mrs. Anne Jeanette McArthur Gaddis, who passed away peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2021, at the age of 94. Mrs. Anne dedicated her life to service for others, commitment to community, and the education of our youth. This scholarship will be given annually to a Lenoir County high school senior. There is no greater public servant to honor than Mrs. Anne Gaddis with this named scholarship.
