In keeping with Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement today that the public schools of North Carolina will be closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has canceled all remaining winter championships and spring sports.
Greene Central’s Madalyn Radford and Perry Tingen have been selected as NC Farm Bureau “Heart of a Champion”.
North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Commissioner Que Tucker released the following statement, “Having heard the updated information relative to schools remaining closed until the middle of May, NCHSAA interscholastic athletics will remain suspended until at least May 18.”
CHAPEL HILL, NC | The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors moved to suspend interscholastic athletics beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 through at least Monday, April 6th, 2020. The NCHSAA Board of Directors will assess this situation regularly over the next few weeks. This includes all workouts, skill development, practices and contests.
For the first time in 10 years, the annual Freedom Classic baseball competition between teams from the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Air Force Academy had to be canceled in Kinston. Mother Nature played a mean trick by dumping the only snow we are likely to see this season on our area the evening of Thursday, Feb. 20. The coaches from Navy and Air Force moved this year’s competition to the home field of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. But what about the preparations and sponsorships of this year’s Freedom Classic? Will sponsors get their money back?
The Down East Wood Ducks announced yesterday that they will host a collegiate baseball game between East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Tuesday, April 14. The game will be played at Grainger Stadium in Kinston.
According to the Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation, “The 2020 Freedom Classic series at Historic Grainger Stadium has been canceled due to weather/field conditions! Series games will be played in Annapolis.”
WATCH highlights as the Kinston boys earned their 15th regular-season conference championship in a row last night. The Vikings defeated Ayden-Grifton Chargers 87-54 on senior night. Kinston finishes the regular season with a record of 21-3 (12-0) and has won 8 games in a row.
Cross-county rivals Kinston and North Lenoir faced each other last night. The Vikings defeated the Hawks 82-42. Kinston High School football standout Kaceion Williams signed with UNC Pembroke at a signing ceremony today. He has accepted a full scholarship to play football.
Kinston High School traveled to Snow Hill to play sports rival Greene Central on Tuesday evening. UNC head basketball coach Roy Williams was in attendance to watch Kinston standout Dontrez Styles play. The Vikings defeated the Rams 67-47.
According to a press release from the New Orleans Pelicans, the National Basketball Association announced today that Kinston native and New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram has been named a reserve in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, which will be played on Sunday, February 16 at the United Center in Chicago.
