On a usual day, Mr. Timothy Sanderson can usually be found at Contentnea-Savannah K-8 School, teaching fifth-grade students the basics of energy, ecosystems and everything else that makes up a 5th-grade science class. That’s where the Lenoir County Public Schools leadership team found him Wednesday morning, helping students quiz each other on new vocabulary they’ve learned.
The Downtown Kinston Revitalization Board approved $25,000 in funds at its August meeting to support the Building Improvement Façade Grant. This matching grant program is designed to assist property owners within the Municipal Service District (MSD) in making improvements to the exterior of their buildings, encouraging investment and maintaining the appearance of the downtown area.
Officials named Arendell Parrott Academy student, Miss Carolina Jones (Kinston), as one of more than 16,000 Semifinalist in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth $26 million that will be offered next spring.
The 23rd Annual 9/11 Memorial Service was held this morning, at the 9/11 Memorial in Pearson Park. The service commemorated the events of September 11, 2001, and honored individuals who made significant sacrifices that day.

The D.A.R.E. program has officially returned to Lenoir County Public Schools, offering students an opportunity to learn about drug prevention, decision-making, and leadership. This 10-week program, aimed at fostering trust between students and law enforcement, was welcomed back to the schools with support from local officials and educators.
On September 9, 2024 at approximately 12:51 a.m. officers on D-Squad responded to a B&E at 801 Greenbriar Road. Officers arrived on scene and located the front door had been broken into. Officers were immediately able to identify the suspect as a 13 year-old Kinston resident.
On September 8, 2024, officers from D-Squad were patrolling the area of Jack Rountree when officers observed a vehicle occupied by Jalen Andrews (22 of Kinston) who was wanted for felony probation warrants.
On September 7, 2024, at approximately 1:39 p.m., officers on B-Squad responded to a single vehicle crash in the parking lot of Walmart. Officers arrived on scene and located the driver, Randy Powell (43 of Lenoir County) unresponsive.
The KPD is currently attempting to identify the subject in the photo. It was reported that he stole lottery tickets from the Murphy Express.

AMVETS POST 1111 is proud to announce the winners of two State Americanism contests sponsored by the AMVETS, that were recently awarded here in Lenoir County. Paitley Rouse and mother Mindy were present at an awards ceremony at GI Joes Military Museum where she was awarded a monetary award for her Flag Coloring Contest Entry.
Arendell Parrott Academy kicked off its 60th year Thursday with a Founders Day celebration featuring Susan Parrott, sister of the school’s namesake. Parrott shared stories of her family’s role in creating the school in memory of her late brother, Arendell. The ceremony also included the induction of the 2024-2025 Honor Council, honoring the Academy’s tradition of integrity. Dr. Ike Southerland, the longest-serving Head of School, reflected on the school’s growth and lasting legacy.

TRENTON – The Declaration of Independence, United States Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Civil Rights Amendments are coming to Jones County thanks to the combined efforts of the County, working with Foundation Forward, Inc. of Burke County, NC. These founding documents, known as The Charters of Freedom, are being permanently installed at the Jones County Civic Center, located at 832 NC Hwy 58 South, Trenton, NC 28585.
