It has been a very productive month for the North Carolina Senate. We have been working tirelessly on our version of the State Budget, which passed the chamber by a vote of 37-12. We also took the time to remember and honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day – paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom.
I love soup and love to make soup, but I must admit it took a while for me to “warm” up to chilled soups and gazpacho! Lenoir County Farmer’s Market update for Saturday, June 10, 2023. The Market open between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm Tuesday and Saturday.
On Friday, June 10, 2022 at approximately 3:15pm in the afternoon, North Lenoir Fire & Rescue responded mutual aid with La Grange Volunteer Fire Department to 4871 Bulltown Road in La Grange, NC for a brush fire approaching a structure. Prior to arrival, the Lenoir County 911 Center advised responding personnel the structure contained fireworks.

A two-month narcotics investigation ended Thursday with the arrest of a La Grange man on a plethora of charges.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit arrested 45-year-old, Qusim Haneffe Maine Sr. of the Jason area, Tuesday afternoon, for the sell of heroin and meth.

Lenoir Community College (LCC) celebrated a momentous occasion as it officially opened the doors to its new Floyd Health Sciences Center. The event was attended by a large crowd, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, all excited to witness the realization of this long-awaited vision. The center was made possible through the support of the LCC Foundation Board of Directors, and many other partners representing a significant milestone for the college and the local healthcare community.

Officer L. Perry conducted a traffic stop on US 258 bypass in Snow Hill. Officer Perry was assisted by Greene County Sheriff’s Office narcotics units after the initial stop was made. GCSO's K9 "Sasha" alerted on the vehicle and a thorough search was conducted of the vehicle.
Snow Hill - County Manager Kyle J. DeHaven presented the Greene County Commissioners with the proposed 2024 budget for review and consideration. After a public hearing, the commissioners voted four to one in a recommendation of the proposed budget, with Commissioner Derek Burress as the dissenting opinion. The budget outlines several key highlights aimed at addressing various county needs and initiatives. To ensure a balanced budget, the proposed tax rate of $.786 per $100 valuation will remain the same. Additionally, an EMS Tax of $.04 per $100 valuation is being introduced.
The Gate of Lenoir County used grant funds awarded to their organization for the betterment of the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation departments by purchasing Automatic External Defibrillators (AED).
The City of Kinston's proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024 has been unveiled by City Manager Rhonda Barwick. The recommended budget, totaling $117,888,927, does not impose any increases on property tax rates, utility rates, or the use of fund balance. The budget also includes salary adjustments and additional positions in key departments. The City of Kinston anticipates voting on the proposed budget on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
There will be a BBQ Chicken Fundraiser to benefit the Ivey Walston family on Friday, June 9, between 5:00 and 7:00, or until sold out. The event is located at Howell Swamp OFWB Church at 673 Speights bridge Road in Walstonburg.
The 2023-2024 Lenoir County Budget was passed with no dissenting votes on Monday. According to the budget memo presented to the Lenoir County Commissioners, the budget reflects the county's commitment to progress and the efficient allocation of limited resources to positively impact the community. The County Tax Rate remains unchanged at $0.845 per $100 of valuation. However, the fire tax rates for Wyse Fork, Sandy Bottom, and Southwood Fire Service Districts increased $0.10 per $100 of valuation based on requests from volunteer fire departments.
