Salvador Abrego Tinoco: Candidate for Greene County Board of Commissioners, District 4

Republican Salvador Abrego Tinoco is a 37-year-old graduate from South Lenoir High School. Originally from Seven Springs, he has been a advocate for growth and change in Greene County and would like to inject new visions and ideas to help further the quality of life of the citizens of Greene County. He’s running for the District 4 seat on the Greene County Board of Commissioners against Democrat incumbent Bennie Heath.

Michael Chastain: Candidate for Lenoir County Commissioner, District 5

Michael Chastain hopes to be the next Lenoir County Commissioner representing District 5 (Contentnea, K5, K6, and K7). He retired from the US Postal Service in 2018 with 33 years of service. He worked the graveyard shift, which allowed him to work a part-time job with the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks & Recreation Department where he taught gymnastics. Chastain still does some work at Fairfield Recreation Center and with substitute teaching. Serving is in his blood.

Greene Early College Establishes a HOSA Chapter

Seeking to expand opportunities for GEC students, biology teacher, Shontia Blount, chartered HOSA at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Health Science Education Division of ACTE, HOSA, Future, Health Professionals, is a national student organization. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

LCPS middle school student receives lifesaving award from NC Insurance Commissioner

Mike Causey, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal, went to Rochelle Middle School to present a Commissioner's Award for Heroism to Zsakiyah Sutton for her extraordinary actions during a fire in her home last November. “The courageous acts of this young lady helped save the life of her infant brother, and for that she is a true hero,” said Commissioner Causey. “It is an honor for me to present this award to her.”
