The Wood Ducks announced that they will be hosting the Cornhole Classic on Saturday, September 17th at Grainger Stadium, sponsored by Brooks Poole, Realtor. Gates open at 10 am with the event starting at 11 am. It is a “rounder format” with American Cornhole League Rules. After pool play teams will be broken up into three brackets with cash prizes for the top three teams in each bracket!

I was not part of the CSS Neuse Foundation Board when the first “Wings Over the Neuse” fundraiser occurred. In 2009, board members decided to do something special to raise funds needed to place a monument for Alton “Doc” Stapleford to recognize and honor all the work and supervision he provided during the construction of the CSS Neuse II. That fundraiser proved successful. The next time you visit the Neuse II, check out the memorial honoring Alton.
On July 21, Eastpointe and its community partners completed Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for 22 first responders, including 18 from Wayne County. The training was held at Wayne Community College.
2022 feels like it’s the year of violence for the small southern city I live in. As the world argues about inflation and gas prices, residents of the city of Kinston are being shot. The profound grief felt by residents of the city is a call unanswered by their leaders. I’m sure the weight of these deaths is heavy on their collective minds as they lead the city in prayer.

UNC Lenoir Health Care is saddened to announce that long-time CEO, Gary Black, died suddenly this morning in Raleigh. Gary came to Lenoir Memorial Hospital in 1985 as its Chief Financial Officer and was promoted to President and CEO in 1992. He retired from LMH/UNC Lenoir Health Care in June 2018.
Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board and NCWorks offers job seekers enhanced training services to improve their skills and propel their employability while providing a pathway to a high-demand career. The training services are offered to qualified individuals who are unemployed, underemployed, individuals that have been laid off due to no fault of their own, low-income, and youth just entering the workforce.

Kinston has experienced a surge of violent crime in the past seven months. While most of those were said to be targeted attacks, the shootings early Monday morning were not. Ervin Waters Jr., a resident of Greenville, has been charged with shooting at a 71-year-old’s car on July 25, 2022 at 4:20 am on Monday. He then allegedly shot and killed 28-year-old John Palmer on Airport Road at 4:45 am. At 5:45 the same morning, Waters is said to have shot and killed a 17-year-old.
Raleigh: Governor Roy Cooper issued Executive Order No. 266 to improve the resilience of state buildings against flooding. The Order directs the North Carolina Department of Administration (NC DOA) to work with stakeholders to update the state’s Uniform Floodplain Management Policy.
