NCDHHS to continue to provide extra help buying food for approximately 860,000 children Through P-EBT

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with NC Department of Public Instruction today announced it will begin issuing additional benefits on Feb. 19, 2021 through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program. These benefits will be received over several days starting Friday for those who already have an EBT card for Food and Nutrition Services or P-EBT benefits.

State and local officials reach out to Suddenlink about consumer complaints

Elected officials across the state have reached out for assistance with a Suddenlink problem. Congressman Greg Murphy, MD had a discussion with Suddenlink’s executives to discuss the frustrations experienced by customers in Eastern North Carolina. Kinston’s Mayor Don Hardy sent a letter to the Attorney General’s office. And on Monday the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution supporting efforts to address the issues with Suddenlink.

Severe Weather Possible Tonight into early Tuesday Morning

An area of low pressure will track across inland portions of the Carolinas into Virginia, dragging a strong cold front through the region late tonight into Tuesday morning. Strong thunderstorms will be possible ahead of the cold front late tonight into early Tuesday morning, mainly along the coast and east of US HWY 17. If storms become severe, the main threats will be damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Parrott Hall of Fame Inducts 12

Parrott Academy’s 2020 class of twelve Hall of Fame inductees was honored at a ceremony on February 5th. Inductees were Tiffany Barnes, Matt Beaman, Jordan Blount, Bert Bright, Jaclyn Ervin, Justin Good, Jesse Grant III, Mary Margaret Herring, Mark Keener, Preston Manning, Robert Mooring Jr., and Billy Taylor.

North Carolina continues its commitment to equitably distribute COVID-19 vaccines

Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D., outlined Wednesday how North Carolina is working to provide equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. They were joined by Charles Evans, president of the North Carolina Association of Black County Officials and Chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.

Food and Nutrition Services participants can now use benefits for online purchases from Food Lion through Instacart

Starting today, North Carolina Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) participants can purchase groceries online using their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards through Instacart.com or the Instacart mobile app, providing access to an additional authorized online EBT retailer, Food Lion. This flexibility will allow participants to buy food while promoting social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and will help families with transportation and mobility barriers.

Box at Holloway Park brings blessings to the community

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of a blessings box came to fruition after Leigh Jones and Deanna Noble met with community leaders to decide on a location. They’d researched various kinds of boxes and found the one they were interested in building with the goal to serve a community and be accessible by foot traffic to those that may have a greater need.

Serving a cause greater than oneself

In 2021, the Department of Public Safety at Lenoir Community College decided to implement a teambuilding activity to complete the necessary training process. The purpose of this project was for the officers to develop leadership skills as a team to reach common a goal, while helping the community at the same time.
