On October 17, 2020, at approximately 10:34 pm, Officers with the Kinston Police Department were dispatched to the report of a subject that had been shot near 18 Carver Courts. Upon arrival officers met with Andre DeBaptiste of Kinston, who was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the lower abdomen that occurred during an apparent drive-by shooting. Mr. DeBaptiste was transported by Lenoir County EMS to Vidant Medical center where he remains in stable condition.
The evolution of the South Queen Street Bridge has the beginnings of a new addition. Light fixtures are in the works for both sets of bridges. The larger section of the bridge over the Neuse River will have six light poles, and the smaller section over land will have four. Adding the lights to the bridge will bring the six-year project to fruition after DOT approached the city of Kinston to schedule a resurfacing of Queen Street. The city used that opportunity to replace the water and sewer lines on Queen Street as well as incorporate new landscaping.
Lenoir County: A $500,000 grant will help the County provide industrial access at the NC Global TransPark. The expansion of a taxiway to the north side of the runway will accommodate the needs of Draken International, which operates the largest fleet of privately-owned tactical aircraft in the world. This project will support the addition of 40 jobs and an investment of $50 million by the company.

Early voting started today in Lenoir, Jones, and Greene counties. With pandemic precautions in place, the wait time to vote has varied by location. The wait time at the Kinston Community Center at 8:00 am, was about 25 minutes and Fairfield Rec Center had reports of approximately an hour wait from start to finish.

Governor Roy Cooper announced today that applications are now being accepted for the N.C. Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) Program, which will assist eligible low- and- moderate-income renters experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19.
