LCPS chooses Plan B beginning with at least 9 weeks of remote learning

The Lenoir County Public School board voted on a hybrid option of Governor Cooper’s Plan B guidelines to reopening public school. W.D. Anderson made a motion for, “I move that Lenoir County Public Schools start the 2020/21 school year under Plan B - Transition, with the first 9 weeks virtual instruction. In-person instruction to begin with grades Pre-K through 2 and students with special needs in the second nine weeks, pending a two-week decline in COVID cases and a 5% or less positive testing rate for 14 days prior to the first day of in-person instruction, as reported by the Department of Public Instruction for Lenoir County.” The motion was seconded by Elijah Woods and passed by a 4-3 margin.

Jones County Board of Education unanimously approves ‘Plan B’ for reopening schools on August 17th. The Board of Education gathered information from their teachers, as well as the parents in the community, to create a hybrid model that incorporates both state and federal safety guidelines. Social distancing will be enforced with all classrooms set up with desks 6 feet apart. Masks will be provided and required for all students and staff with times available for masks to be removed.

Trenton to receive $995,000 in disaster relief funding

“North Carolina’s communities need strong, resilient water infrastructure to support economic development,” said Governor Cooper. “This funding provides water and wastewater improvements essential for clean water, public health and a brighter economic future.” Trenton’s Disaster Relief will fully fund the 2020 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Building relocation.

Edwards Funeral Home celebrates 100th anniversary, undergoes renovation

If you’ve spent some time living in Kinston at any point during the past century, you probably know of Edwards Funeral Home. According to Jim Eason, who became part-owner of the business in 1986 before spending 30 years at the helm, it's the oldest funeral home in town, and it's been sitting on the same stretch of North Queen Street as long as he has known it existed. And to celebrate its 100th anniversary, current owner Justin Smith is wrapping up major renovations.

SECU acquires land near Walmart for future branch site

State Employees’ Credit Union has purchased land near the Kinston Walmart in front of the Premier Theatre on Hill Farm Road to serve as a future branch site. “State Employees’ Credit Union recently purchased the land to serve as a future branch site,” said Jamie Applequist, Chief Administrative Officer. “Planning is in the very early stages and no timeline has been determined. The Credit Union will work with our architect and civil engineer on the design and approval process.”
