This evening, the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office issued this press release: This afternoon, Lenoir County Public Schools notified our Office of a school violence threat at E.B. Frink Middle School in La Grange. School Officials had immediately acted upon receiving the threat to identify the source. School staff and Deputies investigated and determined the threat to be a hoax after interviews with the source and others involved.

Fire at Canady's Heavy Truck Parts

According to sources, an employee at Canady’s Heavy Truck Parts at 5779 Hwy 70 was removing parts this afternoon and caught a fuel line on fire. Two tractor-trailers were damaged. North Lenoir Fire and Rescue and La Grange Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call. No injuries report.

Big plans for 2020 at Common Ground Food Park

Common Ground of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. has big 2020 plans for its Community Garden and Food Park located on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, across from Grainger Stadium. Common Ground is an all-volunteer organization that began in 2010, focusing on the development of a 5-acre Food Park, community garden, and natural playscape.

Local health officials educate public about COVID-19, Coronavirus

Church selling 5,000 BBQ plates for member with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer

On New Year’s Eve, Stephanie Cherry was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. Cherry works as a nurse for Community Care of North Carolina and attends 902 Church in Kinston. Stephanie’s husband works for DOT and they have three children, ages 14, 9 and 3. Immediately following the news, members of her church and the community began an effort to raise money for her medical costs and care.

NC’s Poet Laureate connects students to stories at Rochelle

Jaki Shelton Green is following her grandmother’s instructions.

“My grandmother told me, ‘This is what you will do: you will tell. Your job is to tell,’” Green says to a dozen sixth graders at Rochelle Middle School.

It is a job she does as an author with eight books of poetry to her credit, as a teacher at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies, as Poet Laureate of North Carolina since 2018 and, this week, as writer-in-residence at Rochelle.
