Ayden-Grifton Coach Paul Cornwell resigns

Coach Cornwell has led Ayden-Grifton football since 2005 with a record of 132-65 as the Chargers head coach. He has won six conference championships and took AGHS to the playoffs 15 straight years. Cornwell has been known for service to the communities of Ayden and Grifton over the years. Cornwell’s list of accomplishments far exceeds those mentioned above.

National Weather Service: Strong winds Friday

According to the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City, NC Weather Forecast Office, while the severe threat is over today, the threat for strong winds is just starting. Winds will dramatically increase after sunrise, peaking between 8 AM and 2 PM, then diminishing. The graphic will give you a general sense for peak gusts today.

According to the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City, NC Weather Forecast Office, a strong cold front will sweep through overnight tonight, bringing strong winds, the threat for severe thunderstorms and heavy rains, and coastal flooding to eastern North Carolina. Very dangerous marine conditions will also occur. 

Jaimie Spruill named CEO of Greater Kinston Credit Union

Jaimie Spruill has worn many hats in the banking industry and recently she's earned her biggest one yet. The 29-year-old was named branch manager and CEO of Greater Kinston Credit Union on North Queen Street. As CEO, Spruill will lead community outreach, prepare financial reports and conduct board presentations among other responsibilities. She is the second woman to hold the position since the financial institution was established in 1952.

Melvin Greene, the man who inspired many

From his work as a custodian and a bus driver, Melvin Greene impacted many students who had contact with him. The children called Mr. Greene “The Candy Man” because he carried around sweets in his pocket to give to anyone who looked as though they could use a pick-me-up. At 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 the Candlelight Free Will Baptist Church will have a special service remembering his contribution to our community. As children were so important to Melvin Greene, his wife would love to see the children, and those impacted by Mr. Greene to attend the service in honor of her late husband.

Lenoir County has been awarded Federal funds

Lenoir County has been chosen to receive $26,555 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact The Salvation Army at 252.523.5175 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is February 29, 2020.

City vies for a grant for Emma Webb

After 85 years, Emma Webb pool closed in 2018. It would have cost about $600,000 to put a new liner and upgrade the pool. The initial plan was to replace the pool, but the cost has kept it in a state of waiting. The City of Kinston has applied for a PARTF grant to help reopen Emma Webb.
