Twenty-four teachers from across North Carolina have been selected as finalists for the first North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) 2022 Career Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award in honor of their dedication, innovation, and ability to inspire students to achieve.
State Highway Patrol graduates 21 New Troopers
The State Highway Patrol swore in 21 new troopers at a ceremony held for the 156th Basic Highway Patrol School. The ceremony ended 25 weeks of demanding courses aimed at preparing these new troopers for a meaningful career of service to the state of North Carolina.
Mike Parker: School buses will be rolling soon: Please be alert and obey the law
On Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, just after 7:30 a.m. on Icard Ridge Road in Alexander County, a car traveling south crossed the center line and plowed into a school bus bound for West Alexander Middle School. The crash resulted in injuries to 13 students and the bus driver. Twelve children sustained only minor injuries, but one student was in critical condition. The driver of the car was charged with driving while impaired and crossing left of center.
Chadwick Stokes: English Colonies of the New World - Roanoke
The greatest mystery in American history took place right here in North Carolina. The story of how 118 English colonists simply vanished without any trace has become a legend in its own right as an important piece of our history as a state. There are several theories about what may have happened to the ill-fated colony, but there has to be clear, definitive evidence to reach any conclusion. The answer to the centuries-old question may never be answered.
La Grange Public Library Gears Up for Fall Program Rollout
The past six weeks at the La Grange Public Library have been bursting with adventures in outer space and back in time during this year’s 2022 Summer Reading Program. The La Grange Public Library had a total of 87 registered participants who read a combined 34, 675 minutes. Children that read at least 600 minutes received a gift card to Ava Rae’s Ice Cream Shoppe in La Grange.
Wayne Community College announces Spring 2022 President’s and Dean’s Lists
Wayne Community College has honored 257 students for outstanding academic achievement in the spring 2022 semester. The college recognizes the students listed below as having earned a place on its President’s or Dean’s lists.

4-H members from Lenoir and Jones counties recently explored food production, food safety, food distribution, and food science during a day of tours and activities in Raleigh.
2022 N.C. high school graduates enrolling in community college could receive tuition assistance through Longleaf Commitment Grant
Students in North Carolina who graduated high school in 2022 are eligible to have tuition and fees covered at any of the state’s 58 community colleges through the Longleaf Commitment Grant. The grant provides between $700 – $2,800 to recent high school graduates to cover the cost of tuition and fees for up to two years at a North Carolina Community College. 2022 high school graduates in North Carolina are eligible for the grant money to use for current and subsequent semesters through Fall 2024.
Rural Teacher Leadership Network Includes five educators from LCPS
Five LCPS teachers have been selected to join North Carolina’s Rural Teacher Leadership Network, an ongoing effort to create a capable and diverse community of rural educators with a focus on equity, trauma-informed practice and teacher leadership.
Latoya Moore named to Dean's List at University of Maryland Global Campus
Latoya Moore of Kinston was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus. To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.
What teacher learned this summer will grow Woodington ag curriculum
Jessica Jones, an agriculture education teacher at Woodington Middle School, is ready to do more with her students in the coming school year after completing a nine-day professional development institute at NC State University to teach the Food Science and Safety Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) course.

Paul Ladd of Nashville, TN, a graduate of LCC and Senior Correspondent for Nashville-based World Christian Broadcasting, has received the Hall of Fame award from the Nashville chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
