La Grange Public Library Gears Up for Fall Program Rollout

La Grange Public Library Gears Up for Fall Program Rollout

Rose Burton, La Grange Public Library Branch Manager

The past six weeks at the La Grange Public Library have been bursting with adventures in outer space and back in time during this year’s 2022 Summer Reading Program. The La Grange Public Library had a total of 87 registered participants who read a combined 34, 675 minutes. Children that read at least 600 minutes received a gift card to Ava Rae’s Ice Cream Shoppe in La Grange. We are extremely proud of all our participants and we thank the parents for their support. Now we are ready to send the kids off into a new school year and roll out our new and exciting fall programs for all ages!

The La Grange Public Library will be in attendance at the Back to School Bash at the La Grange Park being held on Thursday, August 25th at 5:30 p.m. We will be offering fun activities to get kids excited about being back with their friends in the classroom. We will have a bubble station,  giant yard games, and balloon art. We always look forward to being a part of this annual event in partnership with Change 4 La Grange. As we strive for continued growth and seek out new opportunities, both in our library and throughout the community.

We recognize that our community is a diverse place and are excited to announce the start of a weekly ESL Conversation Group in September, Let’s Practice English or¡Practicamos Inglés! Grupo de Conversación en Inglés. The group will be for intermediate to advanced ESL learners. We will meet weekly on Wednesdays  from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. to discuss a monthly theme. In September our monthly theme will be “Getting to Know Each Other”. No preparation is needed, just a desire to improve your English-speaking skills and a readiness to socialize.

Beginning in September we will offer a specialized Tech Bytes program. Our featured technology for September will be learning to use Canva. What is Canva? Canva is a free-to-use online graphic design tool. Use it to create social media posts, presentations, posters, videos, logos and more. Tech Bytes will be held twice in September with a focus on creating flyers using Canva. Session will be held on Friday, September 9 from 9:30-11:30 am and Tuesday, September 27 from 4-6 pm. Please call 252-566-3722 to register. Each month will feature a different technology, so keep checking back for updates or stop by anytime for general technology assistance or questions.

We are continuing to expand on our quality recurring programs for all ages. This fall we will continue to offer Storytime for preschoolers, STEMology for elementary age children, and family game nights for everyone. We are adding to our recurring programs with the addition of Crafternoons for ages 5-12,  Teen DIY Afternoons for ages 13-18 and Inspiring Creativity Paint Club for ages 16 and up. Teens are invited to visit the monthly Teen Advisory Council meetings which is a time for teen fellowships, games, and snacks.  During the meeting teens can receive information on how to become a Teen Volunteer to obtain needed volunteer service hours for school.

Our featured program for September will be Beekeeping led by local beekeeper, Lynn Davenport. Join us on Tuesday, September 20 at 5:30 pm for an in depth look into facts about honeybees and the pests and diseases that affect them. We will talk about the life of honeybees, pollination, and their importance. An overview of working with honeybees and what is involved in the keeping of bees and their colonies will be provided. The discussion will conclude with supplies and equipment that are recommended for beekeeping.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these programs, please contact Rose Burton at the LaGrange Public Library at 252-566-3722. New activities are always being planned for the coming months and we welcome everyone to check out and follow our social media to read about any updates.
