On Sunday, July 3rd, 2022, at approximately 4:20 am, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a person that had been shot at a residence on the 300 block of Sunshine St. Kinston, N.C. Officers arrived on scene to find Kianna Newborn, 25, of Kinston deceased as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. On Sunday, July 3rd, 2022, at approximately 6:30 pm, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a person that had been shot on the 200 block of S. Adkin St. Kinston, N.C. Officers arrived on scene to find Michael Davis Jr., 42, of Kinston with multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Davis was transported to ECU Health Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries. The investigation is in its early stages and investigators are working to determine a motive and if this incident is related to the earlier shooting.
On Wednesday, June 29th, 2022, the Kinston Police Department Narcotics/Vice Unit apprehended Henry Hicks, 27, of Kinston during a traffic stop. Hicks had a federal warrant for various drug crimes. During the traffic stop, detectives located crack cocaine and 3 illegally possessed handguns. The two additional occupants of the vehicle were identified as Naulage Hines, 22, of Kinston and Isalic Williams, 23, of Kinston.

Shawn Mayers (51), of Kinston, was already facing possession of firearm by felon charges, felony indecent liberties with child, and misdemeanor sexual battery in Lenoir County. On June 13, 2022 in Pitt County, Mayers, who owns Mayers Realty in Winterville, was charged with felony solicit prostitution minor, felony second degree forcible rape, felony sex act: sub parent/custodian, and felony incest.
Gary Octavious WILLIS of Seven Springs, North Carolina was arrested, pursuant to a narcotics investigation conducted by the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit.
Deputy Devin James was patrolling the Arba-Jason area when he noticed a suspicious vehicle; after conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle and performing a consent search along with other Deputies, Deputy James arrested 38 year old Beatrice Church of Snow Hill, who was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and later charged with Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Schedule II controlled substance.
On July 9, 2021, at 2:40 a.m., the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office responded to 1847 Will Cunningham Road in Deep Run, NC in regards to a shooting incident. Deputies arrived and found the victim deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as 75-year-old Daniel Moore Sr. who lived at this address.
The current City of Kinston Youth Protection Ordinance places restriction on juveniles during the hours of 11:00 pm and 5:30 am Sunday through Saturday. Mayor Dontario Hardy proposes to amend and enforce the Youth Protection Ordinance in response to the heightened level of crime experienced by the city. Councilmember Chris Suggs voiced his concerns about the Youth Protection Ordinance on a Facebook Live Wednesday evening.

On Tuesday, May 17th, 2022, members of the Kinston Police Department were able to apprehend and charge Jameon Strong, 21, of Kinston N.C. for his involvement in the attempted murder of the 17 year old male victim from Friday’s shooting incident.
On Friday, May 13, 2022, at approximately 6:29 pm officers from the Kinston Police Department responded to the 400 block of Atlantic Avenue in reference to a call of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers located a 17 year old male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
The Kinston Police Department was called to a shooting at 1:33 pm on the 600 block of E. Highland Ave. Officers arrived to find two victims who were pronounced dead at the scene by Lenoir County EMS. Officers are actively investigating at this time.
On Tuesday, April 26, 2022, a 16 year old juvenile was arrested for his involvement in the shooting of Aldaquan Veal on March 15, 2022. The juvenile was charged with Attempted Murder and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.
On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, Investigators obtained a secure custody order on a 16 year old male juvenile for Attempted Murder and Discharging a Weapon into Occupied Property. The charges are the result of a shooting investigation which occurred on February 2, 2022 in the Simon Bright Public Housing Complex.
