The heat pressed hard on Friday afternoon as Greene County gathered to open its new high school. White folding chairs stood in neat rows under the sun, but many people chose the thin shade along the building’s edges instead. Superintendent Dr. Rodney McNeill, school board members, county commissioners, state lawmakers, U.S. Congressman Don Davis, and former superintendents Dr. Frank Creech and Dr. Patrick Miller were among those on hand. School staff, coaches, players, students, and a steady turnout of residents filled the rest of the crowd for the formal dedication of the new Greene Central High School, a building that replaces a campus with 65 years of local history.

Governor Roy Cooper announced a modified Stay-At-Home order as of 5:00 pm on Friday to slow the spread of COVID-19. US Congressman Dr. Greg Murphy, NC Senator Jim Perry and NC Representative Chris Humphrey all react to Governor Cooper’s curfew. The order requires businesses to remain closed from 10:00 pm until 5:00 am. and shortens the timeframe on-site alcohol can be sold to 9:00 pm, from the previous order of 11:00 pm.
