During todays Lenoir County Commissionerโs Meeting, the Lenoir County Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Commissioner Chad Rouse. Immediately following the meeting, the clerk to the board published the notice for the special meeting.

Commissioner Chad Rouse is resigning from the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners. Neuse News has confirmed that Lenoir County School Board member Keith King will be voted on as Rouse's replacement at an upcoming special Lenoir County Board of Commissioners meeting.

A swearing in ceremony was held for Commissioners J. Mac Daughety, Eric Rouse, and Roland Best. Daughety and Rouse were unopposed in Novemberโs midterm election, and Best beat out candidate Michael Chastain to retain his seat on the board.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey honored first responders at Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department. Causey handed the SAVE awards to Sandy Bottom Fire Chief Daniel Chewning, Deputy Chief Scott Hardison, Assistant Chief Timothy Mooring Jr., Capt. Kyle Owens and firefighters Chris Locke and Landon Stroud, along with Southwood Capt. Tyler Foyles and Deep Run firefighter Blake Ellis.
J. Mac Daughety, Lenoir County Commissioner and member of the Sandy Bottom Fire Department board said, โSandy Bottom is like all of our fire departments, is a collection of individuals who chose to serve their community. They donโt do it for glory, they donโt do it for fame.โ
Lenoir County Manager Michael James released the fiscal year 2021-2022 recommended operating and capital budget for Lenoir County. The County Commissioners voted unanimously at the last meeting to approve the proposed budget. The next fiscal yearโs budget maintains the existing tax rate of $0.845 per $100 of valuation.
โWhat the governor is seeking to do is conniving and dangerous to everyone in the state who cherishes their freedoms and balance of government,โ said Lenoir County Commissioner Eric Rouse. โUnder the veil of public health, he is trying to expand his powers into areas of government that he would not otherwise be permitted to or have authority over.โ
โWe will be following the order for sure and talking to individuals that could be in violation. We will be warning individuals who are not following the order and if they continue, we will follow up with the enforcement action. Everyone must do their part,โ said City of Kinston Mayor Don Hardy.
In the upcoming Lenoir County Commissioners meeting on Monday, there is a resolution to approve three additional days of vacation for county employees in 2021. The proposal in the agenda cites employee burnout as a real prospect in which they hope to avoid by approval of the resolution. The average daily payroll for county employees is $66,612.24. In 2020 the Board of Commissioners currently provides 14 paid holidays for county employees.
The Lenoir County Commissioners will meet Thursday to discuss the Confederate statue at the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitors Center. Commissioners say plans were already in the works to relocate the statue, but public statements by Kinston Mayor Dontario Hardy regarding the statue required them to call the emergency meeting.
Lenoir County built the later named W.E. โBillyโ Smith Detention Center a little over six years ago to keep inmates in-county and reduce the financial burden on Lenoir County taxpayers. Today, staffing shortages at the Lenoir County jail have led to approximately 35 inmates being housed in other counties at a cost of $50 per day per inmate.
