Summer Wrap-Up and Back to School at the Pink Hill Public Library

By Lori Bradford

The UNBOX Your Summer Reading Program introduced us to many new faces at the Pink Hill Public Library. We registered almost 100 participants that completed challenges to share in person with us or through social media. Participants completed challenges of a wide variety that had them playing balloon tennis with family members, completing scavenger hunts around town, and of course reading books. Pink Hill readers have reached a whopping 9,313 minutes to this day, and more will continue to be logged before the cut off of July 28th.

Our Teen LEADers Summer Reading Program has kept teens occupied throughout the summer with programs that have given them the opportunity to lead and experiment. They have also tested their culinary skills in our mystery cooking challenge. We provided them with the ingredients, but they had to recreate the secret recipe! This led to some epic fails but also a few wins. The teens also worked together to imagine and then film their own short movie. They decided to go scary and tell a story of a witch with secret powers working inside of the library. Teens have one more program, a Gaming Tournament, on Thursday, July 27th at 5:00 p.m. so there is still time to participate.

As the summer winds down, there are only a few more weeks before school bells ring. The 8th annual Back to School Bash is approaching and we want to invite all from Pink Hill and surrounding school areas to join us for this event. There will be free school supplies given away  on a first come first serve basis with no advanced registration required.. We will also have resource tables available sharing information to families from  Lenoir Community College, Lenoir County Health Department, Migrant Education Program, Partnership for Children of Lenoir and Greene Counties, and the Mediation Center of Eastern North Carolina.

This year’s Back to School Bash will be held on Saturday, August 5th from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Come dressed to get wet and don’t forget your towels and sunscreen! The Back to School Bash is made possible by donations and sponsorship from the Pink Hill Ruritan Club, Howard’s Insurance of Pink Hill, customers of Pink Hill Chiropractic, and the local community. If you are interested in making a monetary or supply donation, please contact Lori Bradford at 252-568-3631. We look forward to closing out the summer with you!
