Friends of the Homeless Shelter has been named a finalist in the Community Champions contest sponsored by Omaha, Neb.-based WoodmenLife, a champion of family, community, and country since 1890. The Kinston, N.C.-based not-for-profit organization is one of five finalists in the running for a $6,000 Grand Prize donation to support its emergency shelter and temporary housing for homeless and displaced individuals and families in the Kinston area.

A vote of the people will help determine the Grand Prize winner. The community is encouraged to learn more about Friends of the Homeless Shelter and other finalists, and vote for the most deserving organization by visiting WoodmenLife's Facebook and Instagram channels or visiting the WoodmenLife Community Champions website. Voting is open until August 12.

WoodmenLife will select one $6,000 Grand Prize winner and four Finalists, who will each receive $1,000 donations. The selections will be announced on Facebook and Instagram on Saturday, August 29. Complete contest rules are available online.

Friends of the Homeless Shelter was selected from dozens of entries based on its work in Lenoir County, where the organization operates a 44-bed emergency shelter that provides temporary housing to transient, homeless, or displaced families and individuals in the Kinston area, giving guests a safe place to stay along with support in their time of need.

โ€œWoodmenLife's Community Champions initiative is our way of enabling Friends of the Homeless Shelter and other deserving organizations to improve the lives of their neighbors and build stronger communities across the country,โ€ said WoodmenLife Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer Kyle McMahan. โ€œWoodmenLife chapters and members actively support their communities year-round, participating in more than 2,700 events and donating more than 123,000 hours toward community improvement projects annually.โ€
