Jul 20 KPD: Weekend recap

July 20, 2026

2:49 AM - KPD's A-Squad responded to a breaking and entering in progress in the 2200 block of Briarfield Road. While officers were responding, they were advised the suspect had fled the area. Officers arrived and conducted an extensive search but were unable to locate him.

Officers interviewed the victim, who identified the suspect as 19-year-old Alexandru Artis of Kinston. The victim reported that after Artis unlawfully entered the residence, he threatened to assault her if she called 911. Officers located the point of entry used to gain access to the home and processed the scene before continuing the investigation.

A short time later, officers were dispatched back to the residence after Artis returned and broke into the home a second time. During this incident, Artis assaulted the victim before fleeing the area again.

Officers later located Artis riding a bicycle and attempted to take him into custody. Artis resisted officers, but they were able to gain compliance and place him under arrest. He was transported to the Lenoir County Jail.

Artis has been charged with:

- Breaking and Entering to Terrorize (2 counts)

- Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence (2 counts)

- Injury to Personal Property

- Injury to Real Property

- Interfering with Emergency Communications

- Resisting a Public Officer

Artis remains in the custody of the Lenoir County Jail at the time of this release.

9:23 PM - KPD's A-Squad conducted a traffic stop at S. Queen Street and E. Shine Street. During the stop, officers observed an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle and discovered the driver, 42-year-old Ferenzo Cannon of Snow Hill, had an outstanding Order for Arrest.

Cannon was taken into custody. During a search incident to arrest, officers located crack cocaine, powder cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.

In addition to the outstanding Order for Arrest, Cannon was charged with Felony Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Felony Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving While License Revoked, Unsafe Movement Violation, and Open Container of Alcohol.

Case Update

Genuwyne Freeman (25 of Snow Hill) was taken into custody by the Greene County Sheriff's Office on July 18, 2026, for his involvement in the attempted murder that occurred on June 28, 2026, on South Davis Street.

Freeman was charged with Accessory Before the Fact and was transported to Kinston, where he was placed in the Lenoir County Jail.

CASE UPDATE:

July 14, 2026

A 17-year-old juvenile male was taken into custody by the Kinston Police Department's VCAT Unit for his involvement in the attempted murder that occurred on June 28, 2026, on South Davis Street.

He has been charged with the following offenses:

- Conspiracy to Commit Attempted First-Degree Murder (2 counts)

- Conspiracy to Commit Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury

- Conspiracy to Commit Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill

- Conspiracy to Commit Malicious Assault in Secret (2 counts)

On June 28, 2026, at approximately 11:37 p.m., officers with the Kinston Police Department's B-Squad responded to 316 South Davis Street following reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located 21-year-old Andre Hall suffering from a gunshot wound. A second victim, a 15-year-old juvenile, was also shot at but was not struck.

Officers immediately rendered lifesaving aid to Hall until Lenoir County EMS arrived. Hall was transported to ECU Health, where he remains in serious condition.

Kinston Police Detectives responded to the scene and launched an investigation. Through witness interviews and the review of video evidence, detectives identified multiple suspects. The investigation has resulted in the following arrests:

• Two Counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder

• Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting

Serious Injury

• Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill

• Two Counts of Malicious Assault in Secret

• Six Counts of Felony Conspiracy

• Injury to Personal Property

• Discharging a Firearm Within the City Limits

Dexter Washington, 22, of Raleigh

• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

• Simple Possession of Schedule VI Controlled Substance

• Carrying a Concealed Gun

Zaire Corbitt, 23, of Kinston

• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

• Simple Possession of Schedule VI Controlled Substance

• Carrying a Concealed Gun

This investigation remains active, and additional arrests are expected.

A-Squad Recap July 18-19, 2026

8:14 PM - Officers conducted a traffic stop on Smithfield Way at Hwy. 258 North. The driver, 36-year-old Nikki Garner of Lenoir County, was arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI), Open Container of Alcohol, and No Liability Insurance.

9:19 PM - Officers conducted a traffic stop at E. Caswell Street and N. Orion Street. The driver, Dericko Williams, refused to comply with officers and refused to provide his driver's license. Williams was ultimately taken into custody after continuing to resist officers. He was charged with Resisting a Public Officer, Driving While License Revoked, and Speeding.

July 19, 2026

1:58 AM - Officers responded to the 400 block of W. Vernon Avenue to assist the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office with a traffic stop. A deputy advised that 36-year-old Neiosha Boswell had nearly struck his patrol vehicle while traveling on Highway 70. KPD officers conducted a DWI investigation, which resulted in Boswell being arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired (DWI).
