NWS warns of dangerous heat expected to bring extreme impacts to Eastern NC

The National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City is warning residents to prepare for a prolonged heat wave expected to bring dangerous conditions to Eastern North Carolina later this week and into early next week.

According to the briefing issued at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, heat impacts are expected to begin Thursday and increase through the weekend. The most serious conditions are forecast during the weekend, when temperatures may exceed 100 degrees and heat index values could make it feel close to 110 degrees.

The heat wave is expected to coincide with Fourth of July celebrations, increasing concerns for people attending outdoor events. The NWS said long-duration extreme heat can affect anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration.

Friday is forecast to bring a major HeatRisk for much of the area, with extreme HeatRisk expected Saturday through Monday. Extreme HeatRisk means heat-related illness is possible for the entire population unless precautions are taken. The NWS also warned there may be little to no relief at night, and air conditioning may be necessary because fans and open windows will not be enough.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, stay in air-conditioned spaces and check on neighbors, family members and pets. Children, elderly residents, pregnant women, newborns and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.

The NWS also reminded residents never to leave people or pets alone in a closed vehicle. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms may include confusion, dizziness or unconsciousness, and 911 should be called immediately.

The next briefing from the National Weather Service is expected by noon Thursday, July 2.
