Greene County Celebrates Opening of New License Plate Agency in Snow Hill

"We had to drive through all the other counties to register my vehicle, and now we actually have one right here. In and out."

After four years without local DMV services, Greene County residents can once again handle vehicle registrations, tag renewals, and title work close to home. Local officials and community members gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the county’s new license plate agency, located at 415 U.S. Highway 13 South, Suite C, at Laney Wood Place in Snow Hill.

The well-attended ceremony included most Snow Hill town commissioners, two county commissioners, the county tax assessor, and the sheriff.

A Long Wait Comes to an End

Greene County had been without a license plate agency since the previous location in Hookerton closed in 2021. For four years, residents were required to drive to neighboring counties for routine services, turning a simple errand into a time-consuming trip.

The new agency is operated by Myranda Jeffrey and her family, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on state holidays. Services available at the location include vehicle registrations and title transactions, license plate renewals, replacement tags, handicap placards, and duplicate registrations.

The Greene County License Plate Agency is one of 128 such offices operating across North Carolina. While the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles oversees all agencies statewide; individual locations are managed by private operators or local governments.

Community Leaders Welcome the New Facility

Mayor Dianne Andrews opened the ceremony by thanking the Jeffrey family and welcoming them to the community.

“I want to thank the Jeffrey family. Thank you to everybody who came out this morning. This is a wonderful facility, and I don’t know how y’all feel, but I love coming to get my tags and not having to wait and wait and wait and wait,” Andrews said. “It is wonderful to have new people in Greene County and Snow Hill, and we thank you. We really do. It’s a great facility.”

Andrews also called for stronger support of the Greene County Chamber of Commerce. She referenced guidance from Samantha Darlington, a planner with the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Main Street and Rural Planning Center, who has been working with the town on economic development.

“One of the things our economic development planner told us is that one of the best ways to have the best area is to have a strong chamber,” Andrews said. “We really need to get our chamber up and running. We need everybody to pull behind and work together with our chamber.”

Greene County Chamber Director Jami Williams, who worked closely with the Jeffrey family to find the right home for the new agency, said the process involved exploring several options before landing on the ideal site.

“Working with you, Miranda, when we were trying to make something work at Town Hall and all kinds of stuff, obviously, this is a better fit, especially with room and space,” Vinson said. “I love the fact that we’ve got one back in Greene County. Thanks to you guys. So congratulations.”

Town Manager April Vinson also praised the Jeffrey family for choosing Snow Hill and spoke to what the new agency means for residents who had gone without the service for years. “We had to drive through all the other counties to register my vehicle, and now we actually have one right here. In and out. No more wait time, no more picking a number. This is just a great asset to the county. Thank you so much.”

The Operator: Ready to Serve

Myranda Jeffrey expressed gratitude for the warm reception her family’s business has received since opening its doors.

“Y’all have been so wonderful. We love Snow Hill. It’s been great from day one,” Jeffery said. “Everybody’s friendly and welcoming, and I’m glad we chose this location.”

She added that the office is well on its way to becoming a full-service location. Wildlife services are already offered at the agency, and Jeffrey confirmed that IRPM for hire had been added just the day before the ceremony, with more services on the way. “We’ll be fully functional. We’ll do everything,” she said.

Looking Ahead

Many vehicle-related transactions, including registration renewals and title services, are also available online through NCDMV.gov. However, local leaders say the return of a license plate agency to Greene County brings back a level of convenience and personal service residents have missed for years. With the new office now open in Snow Hill, residents once again have a local place to handle their DMV needs without traveling to neighboring counties. The Jeffrey family said they are excited to continue expanding services and serving the community for years to come.
