New summer concert series to launch in May
Downtown Kinston Revitalization and The Proof Kinston are collaborating to bring a new summer concert series to Herritage Street in downtown Kinston.
The series, called Block & Roll, is planned as a downtown music event series in the heart of Kinston. Downtown Kinston Revitalization (DKR) announced the series this week and said more details will be released soon.
“Block & Roll isn’t just about music. It’s about keeping downtown alive when things usually slow down,” said Dave “Mack” McHenry, owner of The Proof. “Summer’s tough on small businesses, and with [Herritage Street] construction coming, we’ve got to give people a reason to keep showing up.”
Leon Steele, executive director of DKR, said the series will help bring people downtown while showcasing the district as a gathering place.
“We are excited to collaborate with The Proof Kinston on a summer concert series that adds energy, music and activity to Herritage Street,” Steele said. “Downtown is at its best when people are gathering, walking, eating and experiencing what local businesses have to offer.”
The first announced sponsor for the series is Plaza Del Mariachi.
DKR encouraged residents to save the dates for the upcoming concerts. The announced dates are May 21, June 4, June 18 and July 3.
First in the series to play will be Dakota Blue on May 21. Dakota Blue is a popular Eastern North Carolina-based Southern country/rock band known for an electrifying mix of country and rock and roll.
“I’m glad to be working with Downtown Kinston Revitalization to bring entertainment back to the streets because motion causes emotion, and that’s how you keep our downtown strong and growing,” McHenry said.
Additional information, including performer lineups, times and event details, is expected to be announced later.
The concert series adds another downtown event to Kinston’s summer calendar and continues local efforts to draw residents and visitors into the downtown district for community-centered entertainment.
