KPD: Update: Murder Investigation – Guilty Verdict and Sentencing

Today, the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office delivered closing arguments in the murder trial of Trevor Demitri Akeily Peters. Following deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict, finding Peters guilty of First-Degree Murder in the death of Demario Washington.

Peters was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Kinston Police Department would like to thank the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office for their dedication and work in prosecuting this case, specifically Assistant District Attorney T. Montanye and Assistant District Attorney K. Benton. We also extend our appreciation to Superior Court Judge Imelda Pate, who presided over the trial and sentencing.

The Kinston Police Department remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families and appreciates the efforts of all those involved in bringing this case to a conclusion.

On Thursday, November 5, 2020 around 6:40 pm Officers with the Kinston Police Department took Trevor Demitri Akeily Peters into custody for the murder of Demario Washington. Mr. Peters was taken into custody without incident after he was found walking in the area of Stadium and George Ave. Kinston, NC. Mr. Peters is currently being processed and will be held in the Lenoir County Detention Center.

Update: Shooting/Murder Investigation Below

Warrants have been obtained for Trevor Demitri Akeily Peters, B/M, date of birth 04/02/1994, 26 year old male who has lived in the Kinston area for about the past 7 years with various associates. Officers obtained warrants on Peters for First Degree Murder in reference to the shooting last night of Demario Washington on the 1000 blk. of E. Bright Street. Trevor Peters is to be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of him is strongly encouraged to call 911 immediately. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.

On Wednesday, November 04, 2020, at 8:09 pm, officers with the Kinston Police Department responded to the 800 block of E. Shine Street in reference to a shots fired call. Upon arrival, officers located a crime scene that consisted of (12) shell casings but no one was injured during the shooting. While officers were on-scene investigating the incident, they heard gunshots from two blocks away from the original scene. Officers searched the area and located a subject suffering from a gunshot wound on the 1000 block of E. Bright Street. Officers and EMS personnel attempted life saving measures; however, the subject died at the scene. The victim was identified as Demario Washington (age 28) of Kinston. Both of these shooting cases are currently under investigation.

The Kinston Police Department places the highest priority on investigating crimes of violence perpetrated in our city.
