Obituary: Willie James Houston
Willie James Houston, Sr., age 91, of Kinston, passed away Monday, February 16, 2026, at home. Because of his faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, he is now resting in the arms of Jesus.
He is preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Ruby Lillian Carter Houston, parents, Judson and Dora Houston, son-in-law, Tony Jones and half-brothers, Lemuel and Sidney Houston.
He was known for his deep faith, strong work ethic, kind heart, and love for the simple joys in life.
Willie loved the Lord with all his heart. He was dedicated to growing stronger in his faith and was committed to his church. He was a committed and loyal member and servant of the Jackson Heights OFWB Church.
In his younger days, Willie worked as a logger, a job that reflected his toughness and determination. Over the years, he continued his hardworking spirit at Barrus Construction and Greenville Paving. Even after retirement, he remained active, lending his skills to Ernie Everett and The Lions Industry, never one to sit still for long.
He was a man who wore many hats. He found happiness in the great outdoors, especially fishing and traveling to the mountains. Road trips with friends were some of his favorite adventures.
At home, he enjoyed working on motors, tinkering in the yard, and riding his golf cart around, always finding something to fix or improve. He treasured time spent with his family and was especially proud of being “Papa”.
He also shared a special bond with his beloved companion, Strider, who brought him comfort and faithful friendship.
Above all, he will be remembered for his steady presence, his hardworking hands, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his daughters; Sandy Jones and Kathy Pike and husband, Joe, all of Kinston, son; James Houston and wife, Candace, of Pink Hill, grandchildren; Melissa Lucas and husband, Brian, Shannon Jones and friend Chad Blake, Rebecca Pike and friend Scott, Adam Pike and wife, Kelsey, Ashley Tunn and husband, Michael, Heather Rainoshek and husband, Matthew, Amelia Kennedy and Jamie Houston; 16 great-grandchildren, sister, Peggy Houston DeHart and husband Jay, and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, he is also survived by special friends, Lois Herring (Little Buba), Billy and Margie Casper and Walter and Joy Moore.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Jackson Heights Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Justin Barnett officiating.
