Minges Wellness Center Now Offers Rock Steady Boxing

Minges Wellness Center at UNC Health Lenoir now offers Rock Steady Boxing, a medically based fitness program designed for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and coordination.

Rock Steady Boxing was founded in 2006 by Scott C. Newman after his Parkinson’s diagnosis at age 40. Training with a former Golden Gloves boxer helped control his symptoms, and the effort grew into a nationally recognized program. Today, Rock Steady Boxing is an international nonprofit with more than 800 affiliate locations across every state and 14 countries.

The program addresses common challenges with posture, strength, walking, balance, and cognition. Certified instructors adapt noncontact boxing inspired exercises to help participants improve physical ability, build confidence, and enhance overall quality of life. Boxer to boxer contact is never permitted, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

Participants must complete an in-person assessment prior to enrollment and receive physicians clearance. For more information, contact Alyssa Dunn, Exercise Physiologist & Head Coach, at 252 522 7944 or by email at minges@rsbaffiliate.com.

Rock Steady Boxing benefits individuals in all stages of Parkinson’s disease, from those newly diagnosed to those living with the condition for many years. Research shows that regular physical activity of at least two and a half hours per week can significantly slow decline in quality of life. Nearly one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson’s disease, and exercise is widely recognized as one of the most effective nonmedication approaches to symptom management.

Through consistent training, participants may:

• Improve confidence and independence
• Reduce the severity of symptoms
• Decrease fear of falling
• Perform daily activities more safely and efficiently
• Build strength, balance, and mobility for movements such as climbing stairs, getting into a vehicle, standing, and walking

Rock Steady Boxing empowers individuals with Parkinson’s disease to move better, feel stronger, and live more fully.
