Obituary: Phyllis Harrison
Phyllis Harrison
April 30, 1944 – October 26, 2026
Phyllis Tilghman Harrison, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2026. Phyllis was born in Lenoir County on April 30, 1944, to the late Leo and Alice Tilghman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Harrison; brother, Bobby Tilghman; sister, Frances Whitley and her husband, Roy Lee; and dear friends, Mary “Pete” Daniels and Faye Sutton.
For many years, Phyllis faithfully served as Town Clerk for the Town of La Grange, a position in which she excelled and a job she dearly loved. Her dedication to the town and its people continued well beyond her retirement, as she gladly returned to work part-time. Truth be told, it would have taken very little convincing for her to return once again.
To her family, Phyllis was lovingly known as Mama and Mema, though those names extended far beyond her own children and grandchildren. She had a way of welcoming their friends and neighbors into her heart and home, treating each as one of her own. An excellent cook, Phyllis found great joy in gathering her family around the table, where good food and warm fellowship were always plentiful. Whatever she prepared, everyone knew it would be delicious. She also treasured the time she shared with Darrell, finding happiness in each other's company and the simple, everyday moments of life. Devoted to those she loved, Phyllis possessed a strong and determined spirit, matched by a heart full of love for her family.
Phyllis had a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, whether enjoying a trip to the mountains or tending to her flowers at home. Her roses received particular care and attention, and she was a faithful member of the La Grange Garden Club for as long as she was able. She also enjoyed music, especially the songs of Elvis Presley.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Rouse Funeral Home, with Rev. Kim Holley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Melissa Johnson and husband, Mike, and Tammy Moore and husband, Edward; grandchildren, Travis Johnson, Jordan Johnson, and Landon Moore; companion, Darrell Thigpen; sisters-in-law, Carrol Henderson (Curtis) and Mary Tilghman; special niece, Sharon McCoy (Myron); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
