The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Handy Mart

2227 NC Hwy 11 N, Kinston 

Date: 8/19

Score: 98.5

Observations: 

Hot water at hand wash sinks in restrooms is 92-93F. 

Staff is unsure about their procedures regarding Time As a Public Health Control for hot food instead of holding hot food at 135F or above. 

Apples on display in baskets are not in packages and have not been washed by establishment. 

Food employee wears hair restraint, but the restraint is not effective. 

Byrds Restaurant 

196 Hwy 58 S, Kinston

Observations: 

Establishment did not have a Certified Food Protection Manager present. 

Unapproved methods of thawing were being used. 

Ice scoop resting on top of the ice machine, not approved. 

Fryer door currently off due to broken hinge and piece off of the oven, exposing the cords and mechanics of the machines. 

Crossroads Bar and Grill 

8136 Hwy 55 W, Seven Springs

Observations: 

Person in charge not wearing hair restraints. 

Taqueria Michoacan

7832 Hwy 70 W, La Grange

Score: 91.5

Observations: 

Person in charge is not educated about public health practices and principles applicable to public health. 

No Certified Food Protection Manager present. 

Person in charge is not aware of her responsibility to inform food employees of their responsibility to report certain symptoms. 

No vomit and diarrhea clean-up plan on site. 

Raw, shell eggs stored above cooked and ready-to-eat foods in 2-door reach in refrigerator, and raw meats and chicken above raw vegetables in 2-door lift-top refrigerator. 

Food employees wear jewelry on arms and hands. 

3-door refrigerator has water standing in the bottom. 

End of hose hooked to can wash faucet laying in can wash. No back flow preventer.

Jo's Cafe

709 Kinston Boulevard, Pink Hill

Observations: 

Maintain sanitizer at correct concentrations when being used to sanitize. 

Slight leak at lunch ric, the part has already been ordered to repair the issue and a repair man has worked on it to stop the leak in the meantime until the part can arrive. 

Trash can lid missing from women's restroom. 

There are a few broken tiles present in the back storage area and kitchen. 

Save Mart of Lenoir, Inc. 

107 S Wooten Street, La Grange

Score: 88

Observations: 

No certified food protection manager present. 

No vomit and diarrhea clean-up plan on site. 

Witnessed food employee touch face and then return to handling utensils without washing hands. Same employee puts hands in water where raw chicken is thawing then begins to touch utensils without washing hands. 

Raw meats in reach-in freezer which have been removed from commercial packages are stored above cooked and ready-to-eat foods. 

Raw chicken thawing in pooled water in pan in prep sink. 

Food being stored in direct contact with grocery-store type plastic bags. 

Ice cream freezer is not approved for the storage of meats for the restaurant. 

Utensil wash water is only 94F. Should be 110F. 

Ceiling tile in customer restroom is sagging and may be full of water and has mold/mildew.
