Letter to the Editor: Every disabled person in this city deserves better

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Rekia Harris, I am 33 years old, and I was born and raised right here in Kinston, NC. This city has always been home, but as I’ve gotten older and strived for more independence as a disabled citizen, I’ve found that Kinston limits me in ways that are both frustrating and disheartening.

The lack of quality sidewalks, ramps, and wheelchair-accessible spaces is a daily barrier to my mobility. I should not have to feel like my wheelchair is tearing apart every time I try to get out and live my life because the sidewalks and streets are in such poor condition. This city should not make independence feel impossible.

To make matters worse, I was once pulled over by the Kinston Police Department and told I needed to stay on the sidewalks or risk a ticket. But have you seen the sidewalks? They are not wheelchair-friendly, broken, uneven, and in some places nonexistent. I currently live near Emma Webb, and I can confidently say this area was not made for the disabled.

This is disappointing. It is discouraging. And it sends the message that disabled citizens are not being considered when it comes to public infrastructure and safety. Kinston should be a city that supports all of its residents, including those of us with disabilities who want the same opportunities to move around, participate in the community, and live independently.

So my question is: Are we going to do something about this? Will Kinston take steps to create safer, accessible sidewalks and entryways, or will disabled residents continue to be pushed aside and left without the freedom we deserve?

I am speaking not only for myself, but for every disabled person in this city who deserves better. It is time for change.

Sincerely,

Rekia Harris

Kinston, NC
