Born November 16, 1948, in Waynesville, NC; was the daughter of Jules and Charlie Ketner. Reared in their family home on Walnut Street just down the street from the First Baptist Church in Waynesville, where she was a member until she became a Presbyterian in Morehead City. Her parents operated a feed and seed store and an apple orchard branding their product, “Julie – Jane Apples” from Haywood County, NC. Graduate of Tuscola High School near Canton, NC and attended her 50th High School Class Reunion on October 14, 2017. According to her high school yearbook she was a popular and leading cheerleader for four years. Jane was a graduate of Limestone College with a Bachelor of Science Degree, English major and teaching certificate. She was elected to the Limestone May Court and honored by Limestone in Who’s Who in American University and Colleges. She taught ninth grade at Canton Junior High School in the Haywood County Public School System for nine years.

Her mother passed away in the fall of 1980, so when she and John visited her pastor at First Baptist, he was a bit reluctant as she had not had ample time to mourn her mother’s loss. In fact, the pastor had expressed doubts her marriage would even last. She and John now have shared 41 anniversaries this past December. On December 21, 1980 (longest night of the year), she married John T. Capps, III. Jane completed teaching that year and moved to Morehead City in the summer of 1981.

Since being in Morehead City, she has been a true partner in their business, Capps Printing, until their retirement in the fall of 2006. She also was involved in many service and humanitarian organizations. Because of family experiences Jane’s passion for education, The Salvation Army, First Presbyterian Women, Mary Martha and their Circle Groups have consumed her time even more so after she retired. Her commitment and dedication is known and appreciated by many in the church. In recent years she led the ‘Special Giving’ group. What started with a couple of simple arrangements led to a collection of vases, frogs, containers, flowers, ivy, lights, batteries and two storage buildings filled with each season of the year appointments. For every event she had the vision, plan and agenda filled with her special handwritten notes of what goes where and why! When an emergency disaster occurs, Jane’s bag is packed and at the ready awaiting a call from the Salvation Army Headquarters. As a volunteer, she has served after hurricanes in Titusville, Biloxi, Galveston Island and Downeast Stacy! She is a member and past chairman of the local Advisory Board, served as the Christmas Kettle Coordinator for ten years and is their number one “shopper” at their popular Thrift / Family store. Jane was a member of the “Anchor the Army Capital Campaign” in the quest for the Worship and Family Center at the corner of Bridges St and Church Street in Morehead City. Jane is a recipient of the William Booth Award, the highest and one of the most prestigious awards that may be conferred upon an individual from the regional and territorial commands of The Salvation Army. God has blessed Jane with a heart ever so large that she welcomes six sons she did not have to give birth to. Four from India, 1 from Bangladesh and one from the Philippines, who were Rotary Youth Exchange Students. She likes to tell the story that her boys are Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Catholic, rounds them up and takes them to a Presbyterian or Baptist Church!
